There is one compliment I get the most. It always makes me smile to myself.
“Wow, your camera takes such good photos.”
I’ll tell you straight up - I hear this all the time. It’s a well meaning, genuinely excited moment. It’s usually when I show clients the back of my camera during their session. I appreciate the compliment, but in reality, photography is so much more than the gear you use.
I usually respond with, ‘Thank you! I taught it everything it knows.’ This gets a chuckle and reminds my clients that my camera and my gear is only a part of what photography is.
Since the days of darkroom processing, photographers have been editing photos from the start. Using filters, adjusting contrast and even dodging and burning!
There’s a whole process to photography - from learning, understanding and applying settings in camera to suit your shoot, choosing and using different lenses, off camera flash and other lighting setups, knowing what time of day and weather conditions needed for the richest images. And that’s just a small portion!
Then you have style. Every photographer at heart is an artist. Composition, lighting, retouching, colour, tones, ambience, shots, angles, personal taste all contribute to the final images. Some love to process their images, some like to leave them more or less straight out of camera.
Every photographer sees beauty in the mundane, and the best photographers encourage genuine emotions and connections from their subjects.
One thing holds true though. When you hire a professional photographer, you’re hiring someone who has dedicated their life to learning to create beautiful memories that last forever, and that quality just can’t be matched.
