As we wind down the year and head into the holiday season I’ve been reflecting on the journey we’ve taken this past 12 months. It’s been a lot of ups and downs. We all tend to work hard and many of us don’t take the breaks we need to refresh ourselves. In fact, taking breaks actually makes us more productive according to science.
Last summer my fiancé and assistant Senija and I took a trip with my family to Rainbow Beach at the Sunshine Coast. While we were there we really made an effort to disconnect from technology for the duration of our stay. This wasn’t hard because there was so much to do and see and explore. However.
I found myself thinking about how much I needed social media to feel validated in my experiences, and how anxious and depressed the constant stream of news - mostly negative, I guess that’s just how the internet is these days - was taking a huge toll on my mental energy.
That week refreshed me and broke the habit of checking social media every 10 minutes. When we returned, I unfollowed all of my news sources on facebook and replaced them with other photographers, positive groups and cute animals. My socials are a less toxic place for me now, and I want to spread content that brings happiness and joy into the online space. I have become more business focused, but I also want to use my brand and my reach to spread positivity and love.
I’ve never worked harder in my business and in my passions than I have this year. But sometimes, I need to take a holiday too.
